Sixteen teams qualified for the World Cup, which is the premier international championship of men’s One-Day International (ODI) cricket. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is the sport’s governing body. The World Cup tournament, which was organized in 1975, is held every four years.

The 16 teams were divided into four pools of four teams each. They played a round-robin tournament in their pools with the top two teams from each pool advancing to the super eight stage, where teams will again play a round robin tournament, except that they will not play the other team that advanced from their group. The four advancing teams reach the semi finals and those two winners gain the championship match.

Teams in Group A include Australia, South Africa, Scotland and the Netherlands. Group B is made up of Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh and Bermuda. New Zealand, England, Kenya and Canada make up Group C. Group D is composed of Pakistan, West Indies, Zimbabwe and Ireland.

In the 2003 tournament, which was held in South Africa, Australia defeated India to keep the world championship.

Australia has won the most World Cups. In addition to its 2003 crown, Australia won in 1999 and 1987. West Indies has two wins, in 1975 and 1979. Other champions include India, 1983, Pakistan, 1992, and Sir Lanka, 1996.

England has hosted the World Cup four times – 1975, 1979, 1983 and 1999. Other host countries include: India/Pakistan, 1987; Australia/New Zealand, 1992; and India/Pakistan/Sri Lanka, 1996.

The ICC’s executive committee votes for the tournament host after examining bids submitted by countries interested in hosting the World Cup.
