The Super Ligean was founded in 1991 and replaced the Danish First Division as the highest football league in the country. The original league had 10 teams, but in the 1995-96 season the number of teams competing was increased to 12.

The highest football league in Denmark is the Danish Super Ligean, and is administered by the Danish Football Association.

The Super Ligean was founded in 1991 and replaced the Danish First Division as the highest football league in the country. The original league had 10 teams, but in the 1995-96 season the number of teams competing was increased to 12.

The 12 teams play each other three times making for a 33-game season. Teams meet each other one time at home, one time away and one time home or away depending on the club’s placement in the previous season.

The 12 teams making up the 2005-06 season were Aalborg BK, AC Horsens, Brondby IF, Esbjerg FB, FC Copenhagen, FC Midtjylland, FC Nordsjaelland, Odense BK, Randers FC, Silkeborg IF, Vejle BK and Viborg FF.

FC Copenhagen and Brondby IF have dominated the competition since 2000-01. They have alternated finishing first and second during that time.

FC Copenhagen captured the 2005-06 championship by tallying 73 points with a record of 22 wins, seven draws and four losses. Brondby IF was runner up with 67 points on a record of 21-4-8. OB Odense was a distant third with 58 points and a 17-7-9 record. Three points are awarded for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss.

Since the formation of the league, that runs from July to May, Brondby IF has won six titles and FC Copenhagen five.

Steffen Hojer has either won or tied for the individual scoring title the past three seasons. He won the outright title in 2005-06 with 16 goals while playing with Viborg FF. While playing with Odense BK he won the crown in 2004-05 with 20 goals and tied with three other players in 2003-04 with 19 goals.
