Barclays Premiership League

Barclays Premiership League is England’s primary football competition. It is claimed to be the world’s most watched sporting league, with over a billion fans.

Also known as the FA Premier League, it is competition for football clubs located at the top of the English football league system.

The league was founded in 1992 and is currently made up of 20 clubs. They include Arsenal, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanders, Charlton Athletic, Chelsea, Everton, Fulham, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Middlesbrough, Newcastle United, Portsmouth, Reading, Sheffield United, Tottenham Hotspur, Watford, West Ham United and Wigan Athletic.

In the 14 seasons the league has been in operation, only four teams have won the championship. They are Arsenal, Blackburn Rovers, Chelsea and Manchester United. Manchester United has won the title eight times and is the only team to win the crown three consecutive times.

Chelsea won the 2005-06 championship by defeating Manchester United. It was the second straight title for the Chelsea club. Chelsea finished the 38-game season that lasts from August to May, with 91 points on 29 wins, four draws and five losses. Manchester United tallied 83 points with a 25-8-5 record.

Rounding out the top 10 teams along with total points were Liverpool, 82; Arsenal, 67; Tottenham Hotspur, 65; Blackburn Rovers, 63; Newcastle United, 58; Bolton Wanderers, 56; West Ham United, 55; and Wigan Athletic, 51.

The Arsenal’s Thierry Henry topped the league in scoring for the 2005-06 season with 27 goals. Ruud van Nistelrooy of Manchester United was runner-up with 21 goals. Darren Bent of the Charlton Athletics was third with 18. Tied with 16 were Frank Lampard, Chelsea, Robbie Keane, Tottenham Hotspurs, and Wayne Rooney, Manchester United.

Each of the 20 teams plays the others twice, once at home and once away. Teams are awarded three points for a win and one point for a draw. Clubs are ranked by total points, then by goal differences and finally by goals scored. The team with the most points at the end of the season is declared champion.

The last three teams in the final standings are relegated into the Football League Championship and the top two teams from the Championship, along with the winner of play-offs involving the third to sixth place clubs, are promoted to the Premier League.
