The Bundesliga was formed in 1962 after the German national team lost to Yugoslavia in the World Cup quarterfinal game. League play started with the 1963-64 season. The new professional league was modeled after the English league that was established in 1888.

The Bundesliga is made up of two divisions, Bundesliga I, which is the premier league, and Bundesliga II, which is a step below. Both are professional leagues while the leagues below these top two tiers are amateur.

There are 18 teams in the league and each team plays the other clubs once at home and once away, thus making a 34-game season. Total points determine the champion with three points awarded for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a loss. The top two teams in the final table qualify for the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions league and the third place finisher enters the Champions League at the third qualifying round.

The three teams at the bottom of the table at the end of the season are relegated to the Bundesliga II and the top three teams in that division are promoted to the premier league.

Bayern Munchen captured the 2005-06 championship with 75 points on 22 wins, nine draws and three losses. Werder Bremen followed with 70 points on a 21-7-6 record and Hamburg was a close third with 68 points on a 21-5-8 mark.

Miroslav Klose of the Werder Bremen team was the 2005-06 individual scoring champion with 25 goals. Bayer Leverkusen’s Dimitar Berbatov trailed with 21 goals and Kaiserslautern’s Halil Altintop was third with 20 goals.

Bayern Munchen has dominated the German championship by winning 20 titles. Dynamo Berlin has claimed 10 titles and Nurnberg nine.
