Founded in 1954, each team plays every other team twice during the season, once at home and once away. The team that finishes in last place at the end of the season is relegated to the second level of the league system, the Eerste Divisie (First Division) and the champion of that league is elevated to the Eredivisie (Honorary Division).

Three teams have dominated play since 1965. Ajax Amsterdam has won 29 championships while PSV Eindhoven has 19 and Feyenoord Rotterdam 14. The only season one of these teams did not win the title, 1980-81, AZ Aklmaar claimed the title.

PSV Eindhoven captured the 2005-06 crown with 84 points on a record of 26 wins, six draws and two losses during the 34-game season. AZ Alkmaar was runner-up with 74 points on a 23-5-6 record and Feyenoord Rotterdam third with 71 points and a 21-8-5 mark. Teams earn three points for a win and one for a draw. No points are awarded for a loss.

Other teams in the league include Ajax Amsterdam, FC Groningen, FC Utrecht, SC Heerenveen, Roda JC Kerkrade, FC Twente Enschede, NEC Nijmegen, Vitesse Arnhem, RKC Waalwijk, Heracles Almelo, Sparta Rotterdam, ADO Den Haag, NAC Breda, Willem II Tilburg and Roosendaal.

PSV Eindhoven also claimed championships in 2004-05, 2002-03, 2000-01, 1999-00 and 1996-97. Ajax Amsterdam won in 2003-04, 2001-02 and 1997-98. Feyenoord Rotterdam’s last title came in 1998-99.

The champion of the Eredivisie advances to the group phase of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League. A playoff system was introduced in 2005-06 for the second to ninth place clubs. The top playoff team advances to the UEFA Cup. The winner of the KNVB Cup receives the remaining UEFA Cup bid.

The three teams that have dominated the Eredivisie in recent years also have the best average attendance marks. Ajax Amsterdam averages 48,124 spectators a game, Feyenoord Rotterdam, 40,184, and PSV Eindhoven, 22,875. The average league attendance is 17,893.
