The league began in 1929 and the championship title is often referred to as the Schudetto (small shield) because the winning team earns the right to wear a small coat of arms with the Italian tricolor on its jersey.

Juventus FC was originally declared the 2005-06 league champion but its title was taken away because of the 2006 Calciopoli scandal that involved fixing games. The title was awarded to FC Internazionale Milano.

Internazionale Milano, which finished third in the originally table, was declared the champion with 76 points. AS Roma, which placed fifth, was elevated to second with 69 points. AC Milan, the original runner-up, was dropped to third place with 58 points. Juventus was placed in last place with zero points.

Other teams competing in the 2005-06 season were Chievo Verona, Palermo, Livorno, Parma, Empoli, Fiorentina, Ascoli, Udinese, Sampdoria, Reggina, Cagliari, Siena, Lazio, Messina, Lecce and Treviso.

Luca Toni of the ACF Fiorentina team captured the individual 2005-06 scoring title with 31 goals. Juventus FC’s David Trezeguet was second with 23 and Cagliari Calcio’s David Suazo was third with 22.

Even though Juventus was striped of the 2005-06 title, it is the most successful club in the league with 27 championships. AC Milan follows with 17 crowns, Internazionale Milano 14 and Genoa C & F nine.

Recent champions include AC Milan, 2003-04 and 1995-96; Juventus FC, 2002-03, 2001-02, 1997-98, 1996-97; AS Roma, 2000-01; and SS Lazio, 1999-00.

During the season, which runs from August to May, each club plays the other teams twice, once at home and once away. Teams are awarded three points for a win and one point for a draw. No points are awarded for a loss.
