The league began in 1929 and the championship title is often referred to as the Schudetto (small shield) because the winning team earns the right to wear a small coat of arms with the Italian tricolor on its jersey. During the season, which runs from August to May, each club plays the other teams twice, once at home and once away. Teams are awarded three points for a win and one point for a draw.
