Norwegian Tippeligaen

Fourteen clubs currently compete in the Norwegian Premier League, which is the top football division in Norway.

In 1991 the league’s official Norwegian name was changed to Tippeligaen after the sponsor Norsk Tipping. Locally it is also known as Eliteserien (The Elite League), but the name has never been official.

The league, which began in 1937-38, is remarkably popular. Since 1985 attendance has soared from 581,177 (4,403 average per game) to 1,655,572 (9,097 average) for the 2006 season.

Each club plays 26 games during the season, which runs from April to November, with the winner being determined by total points. A win is worth three points and a draw one. No points are awarded for a loss.

Rosenborg of Trondheim won the 2006 championship by compiling 53 points on 15 wins, eight draws and three losses. Brann Bergen finished second with 46 points on a 14-4-8 record.

The top individual scorer in the 2006 season was Daniel Nannskog of Stabaek with 19 goals in 26 games. His teammate, Veigar Pall Gunnarsson, was second with 18 goals in 25 games. Steffen Iversen of Rosenborg was third with 17 goals in 24 contests.

Valerenga of Oslo spoiled Rosenborg’s championship streak when it captured the 2005 crown. Rosenborg had reeled off 13 straight championships between the 1992 and 2004 seasons.

Since 1937-38 Rosenborg has won the Tippeligaen 20 times. Fredrikstad has nine championships; Viking, eight; Lillestrom and Valerenga, five each; Larvik Turn, three; and Brann, Lyn and Start, two each.

Clubs from Northern Norway were not allowed to take part in the league before 1972. A separate Northern Norwegian Cup was held for those teams.

Harald Brattbakk is the league’s all-time leading scorer with 166 goals scored between 1990 and 2005. Petter Belsvik tallied 159 goals from 1989-2003 and Odd Iversen scored 158 from 1967 to 1982.
