The Allsvenskan has been run under a number of formats. Since 1931 the Allsvenskan winner has been considered the Swedish champion. Between 1924 and 1930 they were considered league winners. From 1982 through 1990 the champions were decided through playoffs and in 1991 and 1992 the title winner was decided by a continuation league called Masterskapsserien.

Currently the 14 teams play each other twice, once at home and once away, during the season which runs from April to October. Teams finishing in 13th and 14th place in the final standings are relegated to Superettan, which is the second highest football division in Sweden. The top two teams in Superettan are promoted to Allsvenskan.

The Allsvenskan champion qualifies for the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League and enters competition at the second qualifying round. The second place team enters the UEFA Cup in the first qualifying stage.

IF Elfsborg nipped AIK by a point, 50-49, to win the 2006 Allsvenskan championship. IF Elfsborg completed the 26-game schedule with a 13-11-2 record compared to a 13-10-3 mark for AIK. In third place with 43 points and a 13-7-6 record was Hammarby.

Ari da Silva Ferreira from the Kalmar FF team was the leading individual scorer in the league with 15 goals. Paulinho Guara from Hammarby was second with 12.

Malmo FF has won the most championships, 18. IFK Goteborg and IFK Norrkoping are tied with 12 each. IFK Goteborg dominated play in the 1990’s by winning six titles, including four in a row between 1993 and 1996.

Djurgardens IF claimed crowns in 2005, 2003 and 2002. Other recent winners include: Malmo FF, 2004; Hammarby IF, 2001; Halmstads BK, 2000 and 1997; Helsingborgs IF, 1999; and AIK, 1998.

Current clubs in the Allsvenskan are AIK, IF Brommapojkarna, Djurgardens IF, IF Elfsborg, GAIS, Gefle IF, IFK Goteborg, Halmstads BK, Hammarby IF, Helsingborgs IF, Kalmar FF, Malmo FF, Trelleborgs FF and Orebro SK.
