The race is run over a distance of two miles, four furlongs (4023 meters). It is traditionally held on Ladies’ Day and is the most popular race of the five-day Royal Meeting.

The winner of the inaugural Ascot Gold Cup in 1807 was Master Jackey.
Yeats, a five-year-old, captured the 2006 crown. He was ridden by Kieren Fallon, trained by Aidan O’Brien and owned by Sue Magnier and Diane Nagle. Yeats’ covered the Ascot Racecourse in 4:20.45.

Since 1988 there have been three double winners. Sadeem won in 1988 and 1989, Drum Taps in 1992 and 1993 and most recently Royal Rebel in 2001 and 2002. Sadeem’s 1988 victory came when Royal Gait finished first but after a Stewards’ Enquiry, was demoted to last place.

Jockeys Frankie Dettori and John Murtagh each have ridden three winners. Dettori was aboard Drum Taps in his two wins and rode Kayf Tara to victory in 1998. Murtagh was up on Royal Rebel and then brought home Papineau in first place in 2004.

Fallon has ridden two of the last four Ascot Gold Cup winners. In addition to Yeats, he was aboard the 2003 winner, Mr. Dinos.

Queen Anne founded the Ascot Racecourse in 1711. It is one of the leading racecourses in the United Kingdom and hosts nine of the UK’s 31 annual Group 1 races.
