Now the feature race of a three-day festival, the Gold Cup was first run in 1804 and was contested over two heats each of two miles in length.

Because of the large number of entries, the 28 highest weighted horses qualify for the Gold Cup. The next 28 compete over the same distance in the Silver Cup the day before. The high point of the first day of the festival is the Harry Rosebery Stakes, a five-furlong race for two-year-olds.

Fonthill Road, a six-year-old, won the 2006 Ayr Gold Cup. Ridden by Paul Hanagan and trained by Richard Fahey, Fonthill Road went off at 16-1 odds and finished a length ahead of Borderlescott, 11-2, with Advanced, 40-1, in third place a head back. Hogmaneigh, the favorite at 9-2, finished 13th out of a field of 23 starters.

Fonthill Road’s winning time was 1:12.70, well off the race record of 1:09.05 set by Hard to Figure in 1993.

Since 1988 Funfair Wane is the only horse to win the Gold Cup twice. The victories came in 2002 and in 2004.

Other winners have been Presto Shinko, 2005; Quito, 2003; Continent, 2001; Bahamian Pirate, 2000; Grangeville, 1999; Always Alight, 1998; and Wildwood Flower, 1997.

David Nicholls has trained four of the last seven champions. His wins came in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004. Richard Hannon has a pair of wins, in 1997 and 2005.

Two jockeys each have two wins in recent years. Darryll Holland rode winners in 1995 and 2001 and Adrian Nicholls had champion mounts in 2000 and 2002.
