Pride, a six-year-old mare, who went off at 7-2 odds, won the 2006 Champion Stakes by three lengths over Rob Roy, 20-1. The favorite at 9-4, Hurricane Run, Britain’s 2005 Horse of the Year, finished a head behind Rob Roy in the eight-horse field.

Pride, the second place finisher behind David Junior in 2005, was trained in France by Alain de Royer-Dupre and ridden by Christopher Lemaire. She toured the mile and two furlongs in 2:06.81. Storming Home holds the race record at 2:01.42 set in 2002.

Alboradea is the only horse in recent years to win the Champion Stakes twice – in 1998 and 1999.

Other recent winners include David Junior, 2005; Haafhd, 2004; Rakti, 2003; Storming Home, 2002; Nayef, 2001; Kalanisi, 2000; and Pilsudski, 1997.

A number of trainers have saddled two winners in recent years. They are Barry Hills, 2002 and 2004; Sir Michael Stoute, 1997 and 2000; Sir Mark Prescott, 1989 and 1999; Henry Cecil, 1988 and 1996; and Andre Fabre, 1994 and 1991.

Top jockeys include Richard Hills, who rode Haafhd and Nayef to victories in 2004 and 2001, respectively, and George Duffield, who was aboard Alborada in 1998 and 1999.

Owned by The Jockey Club, the Newmarket Racecourse’s Rowley Mile is a right-handed course, two miles and two furlongs long with a straight of a mile and two furlongs. It is described as wide, galloping and undulating.
