The combined race was first held in 1951 during the Festival of Britain
and was called the Festival of Britain King George VI and Queen Elizabeth
Stakes. The name was shortened to the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth
Stakes in 1952. Since 1972 it has been sponsored by De Beers, a diamond
company, and in 1975 Queen Elizabeth II gave permission for the word ‘Diamond’
to be included in the title.
The purse for the 2006 running of the Diamond Stakes was 750,000 British
pounds, thus cementing its position as Britain’s premier all-age
middle distance contest.
Hurricane Run, ridden by Christophe Soumillon and trained by Andre Fabre,
captured by 2006 Diamond Stakes. Hurricane Run, a four-year-old owned
by Michael Tabor, was the pre-race favorite with 5-6 odds. Electrocutionist,
4-1, finished second and Heart’s Cry, 3-1, was third. Only six horses
entered the race, which was the smallest field in 36 years. Hurricane
Run’s winning time was 2:30.29.
Other recent Diamond Stakes champions include: Doyen, 2004; Alamshar,
2003; Golan, 2002; Galileo, 2001; Daylami, 1999; Swain, 1997 and 1998.
The only other horse to post back-to-back victories is Dahlia in 1973
and 1974.
Saeed bin Suroor has trained five winners since 1995. They include Lammtarra,
1995, Swain twice, Daylami and Doyen. John Oxx has two wins with Alamshar
and Azamour.
The leading Diamond Stakes jockeys, each with four wins, are Michael Kinane,
1994, 2000, 2001 and 2005; and Frankie Dettori, 1995, 1998, 1999 and 2004.
Ascot Racecourse is a right-handed triangle described as galloping and
stiff with few ripples. It is just over a mile and six furlongs with a
two and a half furlong run-in.
