The Epsom Oaks, a Group 1 flat horse race for three-year-old thoroughbred
fillies, is one of five classic races held in the United Kingdom.
The Oaks is contested over a mile and a half (2400 meters) at Epsom Downs
located in Epsom, Surrey, England. It kicks off a two-day horse racing festival
that features the Derby Stakes (Epsom Derby) that is run the following day.

First run in 1779, it got its name from the 12th Earl of Derby’s
estate, “The Oaks”. The Earl and his friends planned a stakes
race for three-year-old fillies and the Earl’s own horse, Bridget,
won the race, thus the stakes race was named.
Alexandrova, ridden by Kieren Fallon and trained by Aidan O’Brien,
won the 2006 edition of The Oaks by six lengths over Rising Cross. Alexandrova
was the 9-4 favorite in the 10-horse field. The winning time was 2:37.71,
well off the record time of 2:34.19 set by Intrepidity in 1993.
In addition to Alexandrova, other recent Oaks winners include: Eswarah,
2005; Ouija Board, 2004; Casual Look, 2003; Kazzia, 2002; Imagine, 2001;
Lover Divine, 2000; Ramruma, 1999; Shahtoush, 1998: and Reams of Verse,
1997.
Fallon has been aboard three of the last eight winners. His champion mounts
include Ramruma, 1999, Ouija Board, 2004 and Alexandrova. Michael Kinane
has ridden two winners in recent years – Shahtoush, 1998, and Imagine,
2001.
Between 1985 and 2000, trainer Henry Cecil has been the most successful
with seven winners. His most recent winning mount was Love Divine in 2000.
O’Brien has two winners in the 2000’s with Imagine in 2001
and Alexandrova.
Epson Downs is a grade-one racecourse and is regarded as a demanding,
complex course that is a challenge for inexperienced horses and an endurance
test for the more experienced runners.
