Held in April, the Grand National attracts many of the best Grade 3 national hunt thoroughbreds in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The race, which is a handicap chase for five-year-olds and older, is contested over four miles, one furlong (6,639 meters). Entrants must successfully jump over 27 fences.

From the first race held in 1867 through the 1965 event, the Grand National was held at the Irvine Bogside Racecourse over a distance of three miles, seven furlongs (6,236 meters). Since 1966 the race has been held at the Ayr Racecourse.

The two-day Scottish Grand National Festival also features the Scottish Champion Hurdle and the Ashleybank Future Champions Novices’ Chase.

Prize money for the Grand National is expected to be £160,000.

Run for Paddy, a 10-year-old, who went off at 33-1 odds, beat Ladalko, the favorite at 7-1, by a head to win the 2006 Grand National. Run for Paddy was ridden and trained by Carl Llewellen.

Other recent winners include Joes Edge, 2005; Grey Abbey, 2004; Ryalux, 2003; Take Control, 2002; Gingembre, 2001; Paris Pike, 2000; Young Kenny, 1999; Baronet, 1998 and Belmont King, 1997.

Two horses have won the Grand National three times. Couvrefeu II captured the 1911, 1912 and 1913 races and more recently, Queen’s Taste won in 1953, 1954 and 1956.
There have been four two-time winners. The most recent is Barona, the 1975 and 1976 champion. Androma won in 1984 and 1985, Estuna in 1926 and 1927 and Solicitor in 1875 and 1877.
