The Guinness Premiership was founded in 1987 and is the current name for the leading rugby union league for English teams.

The league has operated under a number of different names. From 1987-88 to 1996-97 it was known as the Courage League. It was called the Allied Dunbar Premiership from 1997-98 to 1999-2000 and the Zurich Premiership from 2000-01 to 2004-05 before taking on the Guinness Premiership name for the 2005-06 campaign.

A playoff system was started in the 2000-01 season and since then only two teams have won both the regular season and the playoffs in the same year. Leicester captured both the first season of the playoffs and the Sale Sharks did it in 2005-06.

In the 2005-06 championship game, the Sale Sharks defeated the Leicester Tigers, 45-20, before 58,000 spectators at Twickenham Stadium.

The win by the Sharks snapped a three-year championship run by the London Wasps. The Wasps won consecutive titles in 2002-03, 2003-04 and 2004-05. The Leicester Tigers also ran off a string of three straight championships with wins in 1998-99, 1999-00 and 2001-02.

Since the 1987-99 season, the Leicester Tigers and Bath each have captured six championship crowns. The London Wasps have won five championships and the Newcastle Falcons and Sale Sharks one each.

The total attendance for the 2005-06 season was 1,355,820, or an average of 10,271 a game for the 132 games played.
