Founded in 1998 following the merging of the Australian Rugby and Super League, 16 teams will compete in the 2007 season that begins in March and ends in August. Competing teams include: Brisbane Broncos, Bulldogs, Canberra Raiders, Cronulla Sharks, Gold Coast Titans, Manly-Warringhah Sea Eagles, Melbourne Storm, New Zealand Warriors, Newcastle Knights, North Queensland Cowboys, Parramatta Eels, Penrith Panthers, St. George Illawarra Dragons, South Sydney Robbitohs, Sydney Roosters and Wests Tigers. The 16 teams are divided into two pools of eight and during the regular 24-game season each team plays two games in a home and away series against teams in the opposite pool. Teams also play six of the seven teams in their own group just once and play the remaining club twice. Winning teams receive two points, one point is awarded for a draw and no points are awarded for a loss. The top eight teams compete in the finals series that consists of knockout and sudden death games over a four-week period until there are only two clubs remaining. These two teams play in the Grand Final that is held on the first Sunday of October. In the 2006 Grand Final Brisbane defeated Melbourne, 15-8, to win the championship before 79,609 spectators at Telstra Stadium. In the preliminary finals Brisbane defeated the Bulldogs, 37-20, and Melbourne ousted St. George Illawarra Drangons, 24-10, to reach the finals.
