The tournament is played annually with each team playing every other team once. Home field advantage alternates from one year to the next. The winning team is awarded two points while one point is awarded for a draw and no points are awarded for a loss

Since 1994 if teams finish with the same number of points, a point differential system is used to determine the champion. Before then if teams tied at the end of regular season play the championship was shared.

A team can score at Grand Slam if it beats all the other clubs and scores the maximum points (10). If one of the four original teams, England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, beats the other three teams they win the Triple Crown.

The first tournament held between the four original teams was in 1883 and was known as the Home Competition. France joined the competition in 1910 and the name became the Five Nations Championship.

Because of player violence, France was removed from the league in 1930 but was reinstated in 1947. Italy joined the league in 2000 and the name was changed to the Six Nations Championship.

France won the 2006 crown on a point differential over Ireland after both teams finished with eight points.

Other champions since 2000 include: England, 2000 and 2001; France, 2002; England, 2003; France, 2004; and Wales, 2005.

France has two Grand Slams, 2002 and 2004, while England and Wales each have one, 2003 and 2005, respectively.

Since 2000, France leads the all time table with 52 points on a record of 26 wins, 0 draws and 9 losses. Ireland is second with 50 points (25-0-10), England has 48 points (24-0-11), Wales 30 (14-2-19), Scotland 23 (11-1-23) and Italy seven (3-1-31).

The 2007 competition began in February and ends in March.
