Super League

The Super League, which began in 1996, had 12 teams compete during the 2006 season. Most teams are from Great Britain with one team from France.

Paris Saint Germain was one of the original clubs when the league was formed, but it dropped out after the second season. British teams made up the league until the 2006 season when France’s Les Catalans Dragons joined.

In addition to the Dragons, other teams in the league were Bradford Bulls, Harlequins RL, Huddersfield Giants, Hull FC, Hull Kingston Rovers, Leeds Rhinos, Salford City Reds, St. Helens RFC, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats, Warrington Wolves and Wigan Warriors.

The 12 teams each play 28 games during the regular season, which runs from February to September. The clubs play each other twice in a home and away series. Six more games are then played to determine the top six teams that advance to the playoffs, which culminates with the championship game, or Grand Final.

The playoff system is designed to reward the teams finishing near the top of the final table with an easier route to the Grand Final, which is staged at Old Trafford.

In the first two years of competition the league table decided the championship with playoffs leading to a premiership final. Now a minor prize, the League Leader’s Shield, is awarded to the team finishing on top of the final table, but the real prize is to win the Grand Final.

In the 2006 Grand Final, St. Helens RFC defeated Hull FC, 26-4, to claim the championship. In week two of the playoff, St. Helens defeated Huff FC 12-8, but Hull battled back to beat Bradford Bulls, 19-12, in the final qualifier to gain another shot at St. Helens in the Grand Final.

Other recent SLE champions include: Bradford, 2005, 2003 and 2001; Leeds Rhinos, 2004; St. Helens, 2002, 2000 and 1999; and Wigan Warriors, 1998. St. Helens and Bradford won the titles in 1996 and 1997 before the Grand Final was put into play.
