Wimbledon

Wimbledon, the oldest tennis event, is the third leg of the sport’s Grand Slam and is held every June and July in London, United Kingdom. First held in 1877, it is considered one of the most prestigious international tennis events.

Currently the only Grand Slam tournament played on a grass surface, Wimbledon (proper name is ‘The Championships, Wimbledon’) follows the Australian Open and the French Open and is before the United States (U.S.) Open.

Competition is held in gentlemen’s singles, ladies’ singles, gentlemen’s doubles, ladies’ doubles and mixed doubles. In addition boys’ singles, girls’ singles, boys’ doubles and girls’ doubles are held. Special invitational tournaments, such as 35 and over gentlemen’s doubles, 45 and over gentlemen’s doubles, 35 and over ladies’ doubles and wheelchair doubles also are contested.

There are 128 players in each singles event, 64 pairs in each single-sex doubles event and 48 pairs in mixed doubles. International rankings, with consideration given to previous performances at grass court events, determine the contestants. Thirty-two male and female players are seeded in the gentlemen’s and ladies’ singles and 16 teams are seeded in the doubles tournaments.

The winner of the 2006 gentlemen’s singles won US$1,208,726 while the ladies’ singles champion earned US$1,153,386. Winners also receive silver trophies. Beginning with the 2007 tournament, future prize money will be equal at all levels. This makes Wimbledon identical to the Australian Open and the U.S. Open. The French Open offers equal prize money only to the champions.

Switzerland’s Roger Federer has captured the last four gentlemen’s singles championships. He defeated Spain’s Rafael Nadal in the 2006 finals. The 2006 ladies’ singles winner was France’s Amelie Mauresmo, who beat Belgium’s Justine Henin in the final round.

Other recent gentlemen’s singles champions include: Lleyton Hewitt, 2002; Goran Ivanisevi, 2001; Pete Sampras, 2000, 1999, 1998 and 1997. In the ladies’ singles competition winners have been: Venus Williams, 2005, 2001 and 2000; Maria Sharapova, 2004; Serena Williams, 2003 and 2002; Lindsay Davenport, 1999; Jana Novotna, 1998 and Martina Hingis, 1997.

William Renshaw and Sampras both have won seven gentlemen’s singles championships and Martina Navratilova has nine ladies’ singles trophies.
